The hike up to Gergeti Trinity Church is one of the most rewarding in the Caucasus. The 14th-century church sits at 2,170 m with Mount Kazbek (5,047 m) as its backdrop. The trail climbs steeply through alpine meadows and offers 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks.

Field notes
The trail is steep and can be muddy after rain. Hire a local guide for the extension to Kazbek base camp. The village of Stepantsminda has excellent guesthouses.
